About the EMAC I set up the Elaine Mummery Acne Clinic in October 2007 to allow me to help acne sufferers to find a natural and lasting solution to their skin problem. My clinic is located at 272 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 4JR and is open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 5:00pm. The Elaine Mummery Acne Clinic is an independent clinic. I am a qualified nutritionist and have spent 15 years independently researching the cause of acne, and a further 5 years using my knowledge to treat people. In May 2009, I released my first book entitled Spotless - The Essential Guide to Getting Rid of Spots and Acne. Spotless quickly became the UK's book of choice and remains the best selling acne book in Waterstones, Amazon, Borders and WH Smith.
Why the Acne Clinic was set up The reason for setting up the acne clinic stems back to when I was a teenager. I tried everything to get rid of my teenage acne. I spent fortunes on medicated skincare products. I tried every topical lotion available from my GP as well as trying various antibiotics over the course of three years. All of this resulted in a dried out complexion, depression with the continued appearance of spots. All I had left to try was Roaccutane. Acne was ruining my life. Fortunately, a friend suggested that I could be intolerant to a type of food. Being open to any suggestions, I looked at my diet and immediately removed the food that I ate the most of, which was milk and cheese.
I found it easy enough to avoid milk and could easily keep my skin clear, but something else started to go wrong. From the age of 23, my health started to deteriorate. My symptoms included migraines, fatigue, crawling skin, sinusitus, food intolerances, unexplained allergies, bloating and cloudy brain (unable to think or reason properly) and anxiety. Various visits to my GP (both NHS and private) got me nowhere and I realised that had to get back to my studies.
I was shocked when I realised that neither my GP nor my dermatologist actually understood acne, and in fact the drugs they had prescribed me with had actually caused me to have acne way past my teenage years. When I set up my clinic I was prepared to see people whose health had been damaged by using acne drugs, but what I was not prepared for was how many people have been affected in this way. I see acne being discussed on the television and listen to doctors chatting about it on the radio, and to my horror they are still giving people the same poor advice I was given. Their refusal to acknowledge the link between food and acne is destroying the health of many people. My acne was only ever caused by a dairy intolerance. On reflection there were clear signs when I was a child that I was intolerant to dairy, way before acne appeared. 90% of ear infections are caused by dairy intolerance and I always had ear and throat infections. These were never picked up upon by my GP. Instead when acne appeared as a teenager everyone assumed that it was hormonal when in fact the appearance of spots had nothing whatsoever to do with my hormones. I was simply intolerant to dairy. The lack of understanding towards acne by doctors continue to exist to this day, nothing at all has changed and doctors continue to destroy peoples health by refusing to educate themselves in the dangers attached to the drugs they continue to prescribe. If you want to get rid of acne, I would encourage you to learn how your body processes food. Never assume that what you like to eat your body can digest. Teenage acne is often caused by eating refined foods that increase the production of hormones, so whilst hormones get the blame, by making some changes to your diet during puberty, acne can be prevented. If you can take the time to learn this information, you will know a whole lot more about how to prevent acne than most doctors!

Within two weeks of avoiding all foods containing milk, my skin had completely cleared. My dermatologist was most surprised to hear of my experience and assured me that it must be a coincidence and continued to insist that diet and acne were not related.
I soon discovered that I was suffering from a condition called candidiasis. This is a fungal condition that affects the whole body, and it soon became clear that I was suffering from a side effect from the use of the antibiotics I was given to treat my acne. The side effect is noted as ' a secondary fungal infection'.
